Chapter 2
"Childhood"
"Caroline, darling, there is no use. You won't find what you're searching for", Klaus said. He was walking behind her through the forest and it felt like they had walked for hours without finding anything. Only trees, moss and more trees. No lake, no big animals only a couple of voles that were running under the ground in their tunnels.
"What would you know about that?"she asked angrily. Her patient had been gone for a long time ago, but still she wouldn't give up.
"I grew up here."
Caroline stopped at once he said that, she could feel how the anger filled her. Now he told her that, now after they had walked a long time, then he could tell her that this was the place where he had grew up.
"Oh, so when did you plan to tell me this? When we would've starve to death?"she said turning to face him. The smirk on his face were only there to tease her and she knew it all to well.
"I would have told you earlier", he said. "But you were too busy to listen to me."
Caroline rolled her eyes. "Lead the way then."
Klaus smirk grew bigger as he turned left and started to walk. Caroline hated the facts that she actually had to follow him, him of all people in the world. Why not Elijah? Or even Rebekah! But no, it had to be Klaus.
"How do you know that it's 980's anyway?"she asked after being quiet for a long time. "The forest doesn't change over a night, Klaus."
"I know that, but I happened to know the place that we woke up in. I had inscribe my name on one of the trees when I was a kid."
Caroline blinked, Klaus as a kid, she couldn't imagine him as a little, innocent kid. That just sounded wrong, she had always looked at him as a murderer, never thought about that he actually had been a human.
"Okay, so here's the deal", Klaus said when he finally stopped behind a couple of bushes. "I will go to a village to get some food and some proper clothes because we can't walk dressed like this."
Caroline looked at him with her 'seriously-look?!' while she crossed her arms in front of her chest. No way she would stay in the forest while he got the chance to actually talk to people.
"What if someone recognize you and suddenly there will be two Klaus in town?"she said all serious. "And you have absolutely no right to boss me around only because you grew up here."
Klaus started to chuckle by her statement, which made her even more angry.
"Don't you dare laugh at me in this situation!"
"Okay, okay, just calm down love", Klaus said as he tried to get back to his serious look. "You stay here, I'll be back in a minute."
"Oh no, you're going to kill some one aren't you?"she said with her eyes winded. "Klaus, you can't kill anyone, what if you change something, you can't change the future! And think about what I said with two Klaus, it would be so weird and wrong."
"Yeah well, that two of me thing isn't going to be a problem", he said while leaning against a tree. His patience was running out, she could tell when he started to look around instead of look into her eyes.
"And why is that?"
"Because I'm about seven years old", he answered. She dropped her jaw when he told her that. She didn't know why, but she got a strange intense of wanting to see him. Which at once made her feel guilty, she shouldn't even have reacted when he told her that. But seriously she had always loved kids and Klaus couldn't have killed anyone when he was seven so in fact she shouldn't feel guilty.
While fighting her feelings, Klaus had stepped passed her on his way to the village.
"Hey! We aren't nearly done with our conversation!"she screamed after him.
"I'll be right back, sweetheart", was all he answered before he disappeared. She could feel how the anger filled her from the bottom up, who did he think he was? He couldn't push her around like she were some kind of a doll, only because he was used to it didn't mean that she was. She would show him, although she didn't want to piss him off because then she might not have a chance to get back home and she really wished she were home right now. She really missed her home, for the first time she realized how much everything mattered to her, her friends, her mom, the house, the grill, even the school.
While she thought about home she sat down on a rock waiting for the ego Klaus to come back. She really hated him, for everything she had done to her friends and Tyler. Tyler, that jerk, who abounded her for that bitch Hayley. She didn't miss him though, she was angry with him. She couldn't describe how she felt, she was so lonely. Bonnie had her hands full with her family issues that sudden had come up while Elena had enough problem on her own. Her mom was all busy with getting her job back and other things. Caroline had no one.
"Hi."
Caroline almost jumped out of her pants when she heard someone speak to her. She had been so busy thinking that she hadn't cared about if anyone would find her, she was after all near the village because she could hear how the humans talked.
A boy, not older than four were standing there with his left blouse sleeve in his mouth. She couldn't do anything else than smile friendly at him. He was so cute with the brown ruffled hair and the blue childish eyes.
"Hi little man", she said. The boy carefully took a step forward so it only were a couple of meters between them. "What's your name?"
"Kol."
Caroline´s eyes winded before she could stop her self. Kol, it was Kol Mikaelson, Klaus younger brother. She held her mask as good as she could even though it was hard.
"Where are your parents, Kol?"she asked with smooth voice.
"Paying for some meat", he answered with a big smile. "Why are you sitting at a rock in the bushes?"
"Because I'm waiting for a fri...someone", she said with quickly. Had she just almost called Klaus her friend? She had serious problems, but to her own defense she'd had a lot on her mind so she couldn't be blamed for making a mistake. "Maybe you should go back to your parents, Kol, before they start wondering where you are."
"Okay, it was nice to meet you!"he said with a big smile before running with his short legs. She was just about to start smiling when she saw who came out of the bushes behind her, Klaus was back.
"Oh, there you are", she said as she stood up. "I met your brother, Kol."
"Really?"Klaus said depressed while handed up a couple of clothes. He had already change from jeans, t-shirt and a black jacket to dark pants and a white shirt.
"Whats up with you?"Caroline asked. Klaus ignored her by walking past her without saying a word.
"I know a cave that we can sleep in." Was the only thing he said but Caroline didn't give up that easy, even though she didn't want to care she did. She shouldn't though, he was a murderer, someone who couldn't be trusted. But that was who she was and there were nothing that could stop it. She felt empathy for everything and everyone, even Damon and he was almost worse than Klaus sometimes.
"Klaus, stop it!"Caroline said without moving from her position. "If we're going to work together we have to talk to each other, you're not the only one with problems you know!"
She was angry, he knew it to. She hated it when she was angry, it made her be someone she didn't like. But it did work, Klaus turned around to face her, but he didn't look happy.
"I'm going to fix it", he said. "Come on now before it gets dark."
"Klaus, please. You can't push me around like I'm some kind of puppy, it's not fair. I want to help, you might have been alone all your life without someone to help you but I'm here now and I want to help you to get us home. I don't wanna feel pointless anymore."
Klaus didn't look at her, but she could see that he was fighting with his own thoughts. She had pushed him a bit to far, she hadn't wanted to use that smooth voice as a weapon but I was worth a shot.
"Sure, whatever", Klaus finally said. "But we will deal with it tomorrow, let's go now."
Caroline smiled at her victory, she knew that she were the person who actually made him consider things, although she also knew that she should take it easy for a couple of days that Klaus wouldn't start hating her.
As the good girl she was she immediately walked after him, she wouldn't bother him for the rest of the night although it was hard for her. She hated him, but she was also curious about what he had in mind and about how he had been as a child. She had already met Kol, who happened to appear as a little, adorable kid. It was a pity Kol wasn't that cute when he got older...
"Do you think Kol will remember meeting me? I mean, I just met him when he was four...So do you think that means that he will remember it now?"Caroline brooded. "I mean, if he remembers it now, then he will know where we are and then get us home!"
She didn't even know why she talked to him, she could just be quiet. But she had never been good at being quiet, it was boring. She had always talked to everyone and everything. She couldn't help it, she was a social person. Klaus would have to deal with it.
"Maybe", he said a bit amused as he stopped in front of a big opening at the stonewall. The mountain was huge in front of them, she couldn't remember the mountain from Mystic Falls. "They blasted it off at the 60's to build a road."
"Oh, that's a pity", Caroline said.
"Yes indeed, sweetheart."
Caroline rolled her eyes, she liked the Klaus who were in bad mood more than the one that called her nice nicknames. It wasn't fair! Tyler had never given her anything and they had loved each other, he hadn't even called her love or anything. Klaus, however, did everything a perfect boyfriend would do, calling her beautiful, giving her gifts... But he also was the murderer who had tried to kill her once. No relationship was perfect though, but she couldn't even look at Klaus that way all because of the one he was.
"Well, you surely want some privacy, right love?"Klaus said while starting a fire in the middle of the opening in the wall.
"Yes", Caroline said before she walked inside the cave. It wasn't big, only 16 feet into the mountain and eight feet high. She had never liked caves, they were so dark, small and depressing. Not that it was all to bad when the fire finally started to light up the place. "I think I saw a lake nearby, I'll be right back."
Before Klaus could say anything she had turned around using her vamp-speed and run through the forest. What was she even doing? She wasn't even supposed to talk to Klaus, not after everything that he had done to her. Sadly enough she couldn't stop it, he had gotten under her skin a long time ago. She didn't hate him, or at least not all of him.
When she reached the lake she stopped at once, putting her clothes that Klaus had given her on the ground before she took off her shoes. Smoothly she dipped her toes into the cold water, enjoying the moment alone in the darkness.

When she got back to the cave she found Klaus sitting by the fire with a stick in his hands that he were picking the fire with. He slowly raised his head as she entered the cave, the dress that he had given her was really beautiful even though it was such an old century. She liked it, but her stubbornness wasn't given him any sign of it.
"You look beautiful", he finally spoke when she sat down on the other side of the fire. All she could do was rolling her eyes, which she had done a lot lately. For a couple of minutes all they were doing was enjoying the warm waves that the fire made.
Klaus was staring at her, which made her feel uncomfortable, she hated when someone stared. Or it depended on which situation she was in, when she had danced for Miss Mystic Falls she had enjoyed every single eye that had fallen on her. Now it was more of a punishment.
"Stop staring, it's creepy", she hissed. Klaus chuckled but he did turn his eyes away.
"You should get some sleep", he said.
"Yeah, like that would be possible with you around."
"Come on Caroline, give me a chance", he said with begging eyes. It was hilarious how his voice always changed when she was the only one around.
She hadn't forgotten the time when he had been in Tyler´s body, she would never forget. He had saved her though, instead of his sister, but he had also taken advantage of her. He had kissed her, or, she had kissed him. He had been right, he had only been a victim, maybe he had tried to tell her, but she had been to happy about that Tyler wasn't dead that she hadn't listened.
"Give me one good reason I should", was all she answered looking straight into his eyes. They were beautifully blue, she had always fancied them, not that anyone did know about that.
"Because I fancy you", he said easily. "I would never do anything to hurt you, I care about you, Caroline. I've saved you three times already when I could just have let you die instead. Still I saved you."
He was right, she hated it when he was right.
"Why didn't you just let my die then? After all that you have done to everyone I care about, I don't even know what to do, all I do know is that I hate you!"
He opened his mouth to say something after she had screamed at him. She shouldn't have screamed, but it would be easier for both if they hated each other.
Klaus turned his gaze to the fire again while picking it with the stick he was holding on to. She wanted to say that she was sorry, that she didn't mean to say that, she wasn't a mean girl but nothing came out of her mouth. He really looked sad, or not sad, she couldn't decide. His face didn't show any emotions, it was formal without a sign of any thoughts or anything.
"Just go to sleep", he finally spoke after what felt like a century of silence. She didn't argue back, instead she leaned to the cave wall and closed her eyes. She felt how her heart sank in her chest and before she could do anything else she felt how a single tear welled up. She didn't know why, after all that had happened lately it wasn't a surprise, but deep down she knew it wasn't because what had happened lately, it was because of the man in front of her.
